Why practice Box Breathing
Box breathing is the most dependable on-ramp to calm: equal 4-second phases give the mind a simple shape to hold, which quiets rumination while the slow pace settles the nervous system. It is used by military teams, athletes and clinicians precisely because it works anywhere, unnoticed.
How to do it
- Sit comfortably and exhale fully.
- Breathe in through the nose for 4 seconds.
- Hold for 4 seconds.
- Breathe out for 4 seconds.
- Hold empty for 4 seconds, then repeat.
Good to know
If holding your breath feels stressful, shorten the holds or skip them; the slow rhythm matters more than the squares.
More patterns
- 4-7-8 Relaxing Breath — In for 4, hold for 7, out for 8. The long exhale flips the body's relaxation switch.
- Calming Breath 8-8 — Eight seconds in, eight seconds out: slow symmetric breathing at about 3.75 breaths per minute.
- Deep Steady Breathing — The 8-8 rhythm carried by rhythmic beats — breathing you can feel.
- Relax Breath 4-8 — In for 4, out for 8: a doubled exhale for fast downshift.
